Current lean

Fly Vegas, then launch NYC from Seattle with you joining.

The active plan to test is now: arrive Bay Area, do LA/SD, fly to Vegas instead of driving, fly Vegas → Seattle, then you join them in Seattle 1–2 days before the East Coast leg.

This removes the Seattle → Bay → NYC backtrack. You can bring their East Coast bag from Bay to Seattle, meet Anisha/newborn, and use Companion Pass on Seattle → NYC if flying Southwest.
Best working shape
BOM → Bay → LA/SD → fly Vegas → fly Seattle → you join SEA → NYC/Boston → BOM
Less backtracking Companion Pass on SEA→NYC Bag handoff needs planning
Fit for stated goals

Research state: flight MCPs still timing out; live web snippets found useful fare signals for SAN/LAX→LAS, LAS→SEA, and SEA→NYC.

Working 35-day itinerary

Balanced version: keeps trip inside Sep/Oct, gives them the Bay reset, and places NYC late enough for fall atmosphere.

Sep 27–Oct 4

Bay Area home base

Recover from BOM flight, SF day trips, possible Alcatraz evening, Tahoe/Yosemite decision. Leave nonessential luggage here before West loop.

Mixed
Oct 5–Oct 11

LA / San Diego with you

LA tourist highlights + Universal/Disney day, then San Diego beaches/brunch/zoo/Balboa/sunsets. You likely join this section.

Hectic-ish
Oct 12–Oct 14

Las Vegas on their own

Strip hotel, one or two shows, casinos/food. Prefer weekdays for cheaper hotels. Fly in from SAN/LAX instead of driving; early fare signals are cheap enough to justify skipping the long desert drive.

Moderate
Oct 15–Oct 21

Seattle with relatives

Stay with Anisha, newborn/family time, a couple easy sightseeing days. You fly up Oct 20/21 or Oct 21/22 with their East Coast bag, then all fly Seattle → NYC together.

Chill
Oct 22–Oct 27

NYC / Manhattan hotel

Fly SEA → LGA/JFK/EWR. If Southwest to LGA is competitive, Companion Pass can cover one parent while you fly the same flight. Central Park fall color odds are still decent.

Hectic
Oct 28–Oct 31

Boston + fly home

Travel NY→Boston after NY hotel checkout, crash with Chirag if possible, then depart from BOS if international fare works.

Moderate

Options being compared

These are the itinerary structures I’m going to price-check and stress-test.

A • Rank 1

Strict Sep/Oct, Seattle → NYC launch

  • Sep 27–Oct 31: Bay → LA/SD → fly Vegas → fly Seattle → you join Seattle → NYC/Boston.
  • Best new balance: avoids the Vegas drive and removes the Seattle→Bay→NYC backtrack.
  • Main risk: no Bay reset before NYC, so you need to bring their East Coast bag to Seattle.
B • Rank 2

Original Bay reset version

  • Sep 27–Oct 31: Bay → LA/SD → Vegas → Seattle → Bay reset → NYC/Boston.
  • Better for laundry/repacking/rest before NYC.
  • Worse on flights: adds SEA→Bay plus Bay→NYC, and loses the clean SEA→NYC companion-pass opportunity.
C • Rank 3

Earlier East Coast / warmer weather

  • Sep 23–Oct 27-ish: same shape shifted earlier.
  • Better NY/Boston weather comfort.
  • Lower Central Park foliage upside and less need for the Seattle baggage handoff.

Research board

Live findings will be added here as flight and hotel MCP searches complete.

Weather conclusion

NOAA seasonal outlook currently favors above-normal temperatures for NY/Boston in ASO/SON 2026 with no strong precipitation signal. October is viable; late October is cooler but better for Central Park color.

Bag strategy

New lean: parents do Bay→LA/SD→Vegas→Seattle with lighter bags. You bring their East Coast / colder-weather checked bag from Bay to Seattle when you join, then fly Seattle→NYC with them. Only count Companion Pass + your checked-bag benefit on legs you actually fly.

Open questions

Not blockers for initial research, but they affect final ranking.

  • Do you want to join Seattle → NYC and then continue through NYC/Boston, or only use SEA as a handoff?
  • Which parent should be the active Southwest companion for the SEA→NYC leg?
  • Can the East Coast bag fit into one large checked suitcase that you bring Bay→Seattle?
  • Is SEA→LGA specifically preferred for Southwest/Companion Pass, or are JFK/EWR acceptable if Alaska/JetBlue/United are much cheaper/nonstop?
  • Can return be Nov 1–3 if it materially improves NYC foliage or international fares?
  • Can Deepakshi host in SD and/or provide car access for LA/SD?
